3.07 – Lessons On Teamwork

The first rays of morning sunlight filtered through the massive window, painting the room in soft golden hues. The rhythmic crashing of the ocean waves below provided a steady, calming backdrop.

Aurora stretched lazily, letting out a content sigh as she lay sprawled across her bed. “I slept like a rock,” she murmured, rubbing her eyes.

Asami, already sitting upright with perfect posture, sipped from a glass of water she had ordered earlier. “As expected,” she said dryly. “Physical exertion leads to efficient rest.”

Akari groaned, rolling onto her side, her face half-buried in her pillow. “Ugh… my body still hurts from yesterday. And I swear, I still smell like mud.”

Aurora chuckled. “I told you to burn it all off.”

Akari shot her a glare. “I’m not using my flames on myself, okay?”

Asami smirked as she reached over, patting Akari’s head condescendingly. “You will have to toughen up.”

Akari swatted her hand away with a huff, sitting up reluctantly. “I dunno, guys… I feel like today is going to be worse.”

Aurora propped herself up on her elbows. “Oh, definitely. Midnight Avenger wouldn’t let us off easy. That was just day one.”

Akari flopped back onto her bed, groaning dramatically. “I was afraid of that.”

Asami, on the other hand, looked completely unbothered. “Fear is unproductive. We will overcome whatever they throw at us.”

Akari groaned again, louder this time.

Aurora swung her legs over the bed, standing up. “Come on, let’s at least get some food in us before we’re summoned.”

Akari sat up, rubbing her temples. “Yeah… food sounds good. Maybe I’ll stop thinking about impending doom if I have something tasty.”

They each got dressed in their respective hero attires, making their way to the door and stepping out into the hallway of the west wing. Akari’s uniform had been mysteriously cleaned without her taking it to the laundry. Their AI hostess was extremely conscientious, it seemed. The corridors were still quiet, most of the other recruits either still asleep or already ahead of them. Descending the stairs, they entered the mess hall, where the holographic attendant was already waiting, beaming at them.

“Good morning! What may I prepare for you today?”

Asami stepped forward first, her expression as composed as ever. “I will have dark rye bread, butter, a small dish of honey and lingonberry marmalade and a boiled egg. No substitutes.”

The hologram nodded cheerfully, and within moments, Asami’s meal appeared before her.

Akari was next. “I’ll have a wachoushoku breakfast, please.”

“Watchyouwhat?” Aurora asked, watching as a beautiful tray of food materialized in a blink.

A grilled fillet of salmon, perfectly crisped on the edges, rested on a bed of rice, accompanied by a steaming bowl of miso soup, tamagoyaki rolled omelet, a small side of natto, and pickled vegetables. The meal was arranged with precision, each component perfectly placed. Akari’s face lit up at the sight of her breakfast spread. “Ohhh, this is amazing. Wachoushoku means a traditional Nipponese breakfast. You should try it sometime.”

Aurora, grinning, stepped up. “Maybe, if I feel like um… whatever that slimy stuff is and fish. The miso soup, I totally recognize. Since my Goonie doesn’t cook much meat, I’ve never eaten much fish. Anyway, I’ll go with something safe and satisfying, if the hostess can do it. I’ll have a Denmy’s-style Lumberjack breakfast.”

The AI thought about it for a moment and grinned. “Would you like sourdough, wheat or white toast? I could serve you any kind of bread you wanted, although these are traditional choices.”

Aurora marveled at the AI. That was exactly what a waitress would have asked her. “Sourdough, please and a bottle of ketchup too for the potatoes and eggs.”

“Speaking of eggs, how would you like yours cooked?” The hostess asked, clasping her hands over her apron.

“Scrambled, please.” She was really looking forward to her meal!

“Of course.” The hostess nodded and twirled her skirt.

A hearty meal instantly appeared before her—a large stack of fluffy buttermilk pancakes, glistening with melted butter and maple syrup, sat beside crispy strips of bacon, golden hash browns, thick sausage links, and scrambled eggs cooked to perfection, far more perfectly than the restaurant ever produced. She took one look at the feast and clapped her hands together. “Now this is a yummy breakfast.”

As they took their trays to a table, Akari glanced over at Aurora’s plate, amused. “Family-style restaurants are really popular in Nippon too, you know. We have our own versions of this kind of breakfast.”

Aurora grinned as she speared a piece of sausage. “I’d love to try that someday.”

Akari sipped her miso soup and nodded. “Actually, I was thinking… if we ever get any free time, I’d love to show you both around Kyoto. It’s the only city I know really well.”

Asami raised an eyebrow. “Kyoto is beautiful, yes. But if we have free time, we should be seeing Tokyo.”

Akari blinked. “I mean… I guess, but Kyoto is my hometown, so that’s where I’d be most comfortable.”

Asami sighed, shaking her head. “Such a waste of an opportunity. Tokyo is the heart of everything—entertainment, culture, economy. You could spend months there and still not see everything. If we’re in Japan, we should make the most of it.”

Aurora chuckled. “You both have a point. I’d love to see either place, honestly. But let’s be real—this isn’t a vacation so I doubt we’ll get any leave.” She sighed wistfully. “What a shame, though. It would be great to explore a little while we’re here.”

Akari poked at her rice, her shoulders slumping slightly. “Yeah, you’re probably right. The Midnight Avenger isn’t exactly the sightseeing type.”

Asami smirked, slicing into her bratwurst. “Then we’ll simply have to make ourselves indispensable.” She extended a finger in an instructor’s gesture. “Perhaps then, they will reward us with some freedom.”

Aurora laughed. “Wishful thinking, but hey, we can dream.”

They continued eating, savoring their meals and engaging in light conversation, letting themselves relax for a short while before whatever fresh hell awaited them. The calm before the storm.

SuperLuminal-Resurgence-1.01-What is Love?

The midday sun hung high above the Kitchen’s plaza, the air buzzing with the anticipation of whatever fresh torment awaited them. The group of recruits stood in a loose line, their postures ranging from upright attentiveness to barely contained boredom. The rubberized flooring had returned, but the memory of yesterday’s grueling obstacle course still lingered in their aching muscles.

Aurora cracked her neck, already feeling the tension of what was to come. At the front of the gathering, Dragonmage stood tall, his elaborate mage’s robe billowing slightly despite the lack of wind. His hands were clasped behind his back, his face a mask of serenity. Then, he opened his mouth.

“To understand one’s own strengths is a noble endeavor, but to learn how to apply those strengths in unity with others is the path to true mastery,” Dragonmage intoned, his voice smooth and measured. “We are each bound by the threads of our individual destinies, yet those threads weave together into a grander tapestry. It is through cooperation, through synergy, that we transcend our limitations and become more than mere individuals. We become forces of change—balancing the elements of will, discipline, and understanding.”

Aurora blinked slowly, already feeling herself tune out the long-winded speech.

Dragonmage continued, stepping forward and gesturing with a slow, deliberate motion. “Each of you carries within you a spark—an untapped potential that, if guided correctly, can ignite into a blaze of purpose. But such fires must be controlled, tempered by wisdom and—”

“Blah blah blah, are we going to start?” Asami cut in, tapping her foot impatiently. “Or should I have brought a pillow?”

Aurora stifled a laugh, but Rook didn’t bother hiding his smirk.

Dragonmage paused, regarding Asami with an expression that was both disapproving and slightly amused. “Patience, youngling. True wisdom cannot be rushed.”

Rook crossed his arms. “So, is there a point to this, or are you just trying to bore us into enlightenment?”

Dragonmage sighed dramatically, shaking his head. “And this is precisely why you all must learn discipline. Impatience is the bane of true learning.”

Aurora tilted her head. “So, the lesson here is that we should all be really patient about how slow this explanation is?”

Dragonmage cleared his throat pointedly, lifting his chin. “Fine. If you are so eager to begin, then let us proceed to your challenge.” He gestured grandly, and the holographic projection systems embedded in the plaza shimmered to life.

The ground beneath them transformed. What was once a rubberized, impact-resistant surface became a sprawling simulation of an urban warzone—burned-out buildings, overturned cars, and smoke rising from the distant edges of the training field. A large digital clock appeared, counting down from fifteen minutes.

“The objective is simple,” Dragonmage announced. “You will work in pairs to navigate through this simulated battlefield and retrieve the flag hidden within. However, you will also encounter obstacles that will test your ability to think, react, and coordinate with your partner. There will be only one winner.”

Aurora nodded, rolling her shoulders. “Alright, sounds straightforward enough.”

Asami smirked. “As long as we are not getting another ‘know yourself’ lecture every time we reach a checkpoint, I am in.”

Rook exhaled through his nose. “So, teamwork, huh? Think I’ll pass.”

Dragonmage narrowed his eyes slightly. “I suppose I should have expected that.”

Rook shrugged. “Nothing against teamwork, but I work best alone.”

Aurora scoffed. “You mean you don’t play well with others.”

Rook smirked. “Same thing.”

Akari frowned. “That kind of defeats the whole purpose of the exercise…”

“I’m making it work for me.” Rook rolled his shoulders. “You can all play buddy-buddy. I’ll handle this my own way.”

Dragonmage folded his arms but didn’t argue. “Very well. If you insist on separating yourself from the others, you may do so. But if you fail, it will be noted.”

Rook smirked, clearly undeterred.

Apex turned to Aurora. “I find your abilities efficient. Pairing with you is a logical choice, Aurora. Do you consent?”

“Guess so.” She looked at Asami and Akari.

Asami leaned against Akari, grinning. “I surmise that makes us partners. Aurora, I am surprised that you would choose that robot over me.”

Aurora sighed. “I’m just going with the flow.” She shrugged.

Akari sighed, adjusting her gloves. “Fine. As long as I don’t have to swim through another mud pit. But I’d rather partner with Aurora too.”

“I believe they call it ‘having first dibs’,” Apex pointed out.

Akari pouted and Asami shook her head, her lips twisting humorously.

As the teams settled, the air shimmered suddenly, and from seemingly nowhere, a powerful gust of wind announced the arrival of another figure. A strikingly tall, curvy woman with golden-blonde hair and a confident smirk landed heavily beside them, her gunmetal-grey leotard catching the light. The old-school bomb emblem emblazoned on her midriff left no doubt about who she was.

Bombshell had arrived.

“Sorry I’m late,” she announced, stretching her arms overhead before placing her hands on her hips. “Heard there was a competition happening, I figured I’d drop in and compete since I just finished my patrol and didn’t have anything better planned than messing with the newbies. Got a spot for me?”

Rook’s usual smirk faltered slightly. “Wait… you’re joining in?”

Bombshell winked. “Surprise, tough guy. I don’t always drop in on these, but having a wrench thrown into the monkey works is how it goes out in the field all the time anyway so you might as well entertain me.”

Dragonmage gave her a bemused look. “This is a training exercise, Bombshell. Not a full-fledged operation.”

She grinned, flexing a bicep. “I know. But hey, these kids could use a real challenge, right?”

Aurora raised an eyebrow at Rook, who suddenly seemed a little off his game. His jaw tightened as his eyes flickered over Bombshell’s form, clearly caught off guard by her presence and her stacked body.

“Something wrong, Rook?” Aurora teased, barely concealing her amusement.

“Nothing,” he muttered, clearing his throat. “Just didn’t expect to have a full blown Sentinel breathing down my neck.”

Bombshell chuckled. “Relax, rookie. I’m not here to babysit. I’ll be your partner—unless you’d rather go it alone?”

Rook opened his mouth, then closed it, clearly weighing his options. After a long pause, he exhaled sharply. “Fine.”

Bombshell clapped him on the back. “Atta boy. Let’s see what you got.”

Dragonmage let the dust settle before gesturing toward the timer. “You all have your teams. The exercise begins now.”

With that, the clock started ticking down.

Aurora cracked her knuckles, sharing a quick glance with Apex. “Alright. Let’s do it!”

The moment the timer flashed 15:00, the battlefield came to life. Smoke curled from the digital wreckage, the distant sound of simulated gunfire crackling from hidden speakers. A harsh wind carried the scent of scorched earth, even if none of it was real. The momentary illusion was immersive enough to make them second-guess their surroundings.

Aurora launched into action, her wings snapping open in a golden flare. She reached for Apex’s hand, intending to lift her off the ground for a speed advantage.

“Not necessary,” Apex said coolly, leaping forward with inhuman precision. She landed soundlessly beside Aurora as they sprinted toward the first barricade—a series of crumbling walls.

Behind them, Asami and Akari took a different route, cutting left toward what looked like an overturned truck.

Rook and Bombshell took the most direct path—straight through. Bombshell, true to her nature, didn't waste time. She blasted forward, literally, igniting a shockwave under her feet and sending herself soaring like a missile. Rook, seeing this, gritted his teeth and went full tilt after her.

Aurora clenched her jaw. “We can’t let them just brute-force their way through this.”

Apex nodded. “Then let’s outmaneuver them.”

They reached the first major obstacle—an array of tripwires stretched across the alley ahead, their metallic casings glinting menacingly. Aurora caught the faint shimmer of energy—shock traps. Whoever programmed this simulation wasn’t messing around.

“I got this.” She threw her hand forward, a precise energy construct forming—a golden bridge of solidified light— just inches above the tripwires.

Apex followed without hesitation, her footfalls weightless as she darted across.

Behind them, Asami and Akari weren’t so lucky. Akari skidded to a halt just before triggering the trap.

“Scheiße,” Asami muttered, eyes darting across the tripwires. Then, her face lit up with a devious smirk. “I have an idea.”

She yanked a mana grenade from her belt and lobbed it to the far side of the alley.

A resounding boom shook the battlefield as the explosion triggered the tripwires en masse. Bolts of blue electricity danced wildly, frying the empty space where a person would have been standing.

“YOU’RE INSANE!” Akari yelped.

“Efficient,” Asami corrected smugly, striding through the now-useless obstacle.

Aurora heard the explosion and glanced back. “Tch, of course she’d do that.”

Apex remained impassive. “Unexpected, but not ineffective.”

Up ahead, Rook and Bombshell had reached the next major hurdle—a wall climb leading into a trench of waist-high mud. Bombshell, of course, wasn’t about to slow down.

“Hope you don’t mind getting dirty, rookie,” she taunted, vaulting over the wall with raw power, landing in the trench with a splash.

Rook snarled. He reached into his belt and produced a small climbing spike. With a sharp flick of his wrist, he launched it into the wall, embedding it deep.

Then he tore out a cable and latched it onto the spike.

“Wait, what are you—” Bombshell turned just as Rook retracted the cable, yanking himself forward like a grappling hook. The added momentum slammed into her, knocking her off-balance and face-first into the mud. So much for teamwork.

The resulting splat was glorious.

Aurora let out a sharp laugh. “Oh my god.”

Bombshell whipped her head up, her once-pristine golden hair now plastered in thick brown sludge. “You little shit!”

Rook was already climbing the other side of the trench.

“Sorry,” he called back, not sorry at all.

Aurora and Apex reached the trench next. She flapped her wings, lifting herself over the mud easily, landing cleanly on the other side.

Apex, however, ran across the mud like it was solid ground. No sinking, no struggle. She simply moved without resistance, her mechanical frame adjusting weight distribution in real time.

“Show-off,” Bombshell growled, peeling herself from the sludge.

Asami and Akari arrived just in time to see the aftermath. Asami snapped a picture on her wrist communicator.

“For posterity,” she said with an evil grin.

Bombshell wiped her face, leaving a perfect smear of rage across her cheek.

Akari paled. “Whoa.”

“Oh yes.” Bombshell lunged at Asami, but Akari panicked and launched a burst of heat into the mud, baking it solid in an instant.

Which meant Bombshell tripped over the now rock-hard surface, face-planting again.

Silence.

Then Asami cackled, doubling over with laughter. Akari clapped a hand over her mouth in horror.

Aurora was wheezing. “I love today.”

Rook, now leagues ahead, was sprinting toward the final flag.

Aurora kicked off the ground, flying low over the battlefield. Apex kept pace beside her, leaping between obstacles in perfect synchronization.

Seeing them closing in, Rook whipped out a flashbang from his belt and tossed it behind him.

Aurora whirled midair, shielding Apex with her body as the device went off, her golden energy absorbing the impact.

“That little—” she growled.

The flashbang distracted her just enough—Rook lunged for the flag, his fingers inches away.

But Apex moved faster.

With inhuman reflexes, she vaulted forward, landing in front of him. Her mechanical arm shot out, fingers clamping onto the flag just before he could reach it.

The horn blared. The match was over.

Apex held the flag up like it was a mere formality.

Aurora landed beside her, blinking. “…Holy shit, we actually won.”

Rook cursed loudly, kicking a piece of debris.

Bombshell stomped past him, still caked in dried mud, pointing a threateningly dirty finger at Asami. “I’m gonna remember this. And you’re going to delete that picture you snapped right now.”

Asami blew her a kiss. “Love you too, mud princess.”

Dragonmage clapped his hands. “An exemplary display of teamwork and adaptability.”

Rook gritted his teeth. “Sure. Except for the part where everyone teamed up against me.”

Aurora shrugged. “You kinda asked for it.”

Bombshell nudged him. “Face it, rookie. You shoulda worked with me.”

“I did,” he shot back. “You fell.”

Bombshell smacked him upside the head.

Akari sulked. “I hated that. Never again.”

Aurora grinned. “So, round two?”

Akari groaned. “I hate you.”

Apex rolled her shoulders, flexing the fingers of her mechanical arm as she examined the flag. Then, with a flick of her wrist, she tossed it to Aurora.

“You take it.” Her voice was as steady and controlled as ever, but there was something else beneath it—satisfaction, maybe? Amusement? It was always hard to tell with Apex.

Aurora snatched the flag midair, spinning it between her fingers. “Aww, don't you want to bask in the glory of victory? This was a team effort, you know.” She nudged Apex’s shoulder lightly.

Apex scoffed, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. “It was a calculated move. You were the safest bet. If I had left it up to you, you might have gotten flashbanged into the dirt.”

Aurora gasped in mock offense. “That was one time!” She clutched her chest dramatically. “I took the hit for you! That was a selfless act of heroism, you ingrate. Thank you very much.”

Apex exhaled, shaking her head. “And yet, here you are, still demanding praise.”

Aurora grinned. “Obviously. How often do I get to brag about outmaneuvering Mr. Tactical Genius over there?” She jerked a thumb toward Rook, who was still brushing himself off with a grumble.

Apex regarded her for a moment before sighing. “Fine. Good job. You did well, Aurora.”

Aurora blinked. “Oh my God. I need that in writing. Apex actually complimented me.”

Apex’s smirk deepened as she tilted her head. “Do not push your luck.”

They stood there for a beat, the adrenaline still thrumming in Aurora’s veins. She turned toward Apex, her expression more thoughtful.

“Seriously though… this was fun. I don’t know if you ever just, like… have fun or if it’s all about practical simulation and tactical optimization? But this was fun for me. These are the kinds of moments I’ll always remember.” She grinned at everyone before focusing back on Apex.

Apex folded her arms, looking off toward the horizon. “Winning is enjoyable.” A rare, almost imperceptible smile graced her lips.

Aurora rolled her eyes. “Ugh, you sound like M.A.—so calculating!” She tilted her head. “Do you ever just… y’know, hang out?”

Apex glanced at her, mildly intrigued. “You are asking if I engage in generally meaningless activities for the sake of social bonding?”

Aurora squinted. “Okay, first of all, that was the most robotic thing you’ve ever said, and second, yes. That. Do you? Not much different from when you sat with us, sipping some miso for the sake of getting to know us.”

Apex hesitated for a fraction of a second. If Aurora hadn’t been looking right at her, she might’ve missed it.

Apex hesitated just long enough for Aurora to catch it—just a fraction of a second where something like uncertainty flickered across her face.

“Not… very… often.”

Aurora got the distinct feeling that if Apex had blood in her cheeks, she might have blushed. For a split second, she looked almost... vulnerable. And cute.

Aurora’s grin widened. “Welp. Guess I’m adopting you now. Got it?” She extended her index finger and winked at Apex.

Apex blinked. “I do not require adoption. I do not—” She instinctively took a step back, her expression remaining carefully neutral, though her body language betrayed her wariness.

“Too late. I have already claimed you as a friend, Apex. You are now part of my chaotic friend group. Prepare for unsolicited invitations to movie nights, game nights, and possibly karaoke if you ever find yourself in my hometown.” Aurora crossed her arms proudly. “Which, by the way, is San Isidro, California. You’d like it. It’s full of crime, corruption, and questionable morals.” She gave her a sly smirk. “Perfect for an AI learning how to be a real person.”

Apex stared at her, unblinking. “Karaoke? What is that?” She raised an eyebrow.

Aurora nodded sagely. “Karaoke. You know, singing songs together, enjoying yourself with others, possibly humiliating yourself in front of friends. All while consuming questionable bar food and cheap drinks.”

Asami raised an eyebrow. “That is a very intriguing suggestion. Given your lack of self-confidence, I gather that your singing is hardly angelic.”

Aurora scoffed. “Rude.”

Akari, meanwhile, was already sparkling at the idea. “That would be really fun… but I have to admit that my singing is REALLY awful.” She pouted dramatically.

Apex said nothing at first. She simply continued studying Aurora, her eyes running over her as though she were analyzing the very nature of her existence. Then, to Aurora’s absolute shock, Apex actually laughed.

It was quiet. Brief. But undeniably real.

Aurora’s jaw nearly hit the floor. “Was that—?” She pointed at Apex with a wide grin.

Apex immediately composed herself. “Do not dwell on it.” But there was still a faint glint of amusement in her gaze.

Aurora beamed. “Oh, this is gonna be a great friendship.” She reached out, clasping hands with Apex, and after a beat, gave her a fist bump for good measure.
